Catania & Etna Tour with Wine Testing

Visit to the historic center of Catania, Fish Market, Etna South with several stops, Silvestri Craters, stop in a winery with tasting of local wines.

Catania rises in 729 BC. with the name of Katane under the leadership of the Greeks. Defined as the City of Etna, it is always in a continuous and lively relationship with the volcano. In 1669 it was invaded by lava and destroyed by a terrible earthquake in 1693. Immediately after the disasters, the Renaissance was marked with large squares and monuments, such as the Cathedral of Sant'Agata, the work of the architect Giovan Battista Vaccarini.
Catania is also the homeland of a great musician, Vincenzo Bellini and of the well-known writer Giovanni Verga.
One of the main squares, where we will start the visit, Piazza del Duomo with the gigantic statue of the elephant in lava stone, the breathtaking views of Mount Etna, and the famous fish market, where you can taste fresh grilled fish and see the fishermen at work. We will then continue from Via Etnea, flanked by Piazza Dell'university and Piazza Stesicoro, before reaching Villa Bellini, the beautiful municipal garden. In the center of Piazza Stesicoro you can see the remains of a huge Roman amphitheater that could accommodate more than 15,000 spectators. We continue towards Via Crociferi, the Baroque street where the two Churches of San Benedetto and San Francesco Borgia line up and then end with the Ursino Castle, the only Medieval Construction built in 1240 and used first as a prison and then from 1934 it became the seat of the Civic Museum where today it houses various paintings and sculptures.
At the end of the visit of Catania we will travel to the North-West, crossing small villages including Nicolosi, traditionally called the 'Porta Dell'Etna' thanks to its strategic position which makes it a privileged access point to the volcano.
Etna Volcano: Still active it is one of the most famous volcanoes in the world, as well as the largest and most active volcano in Europe. Etna was born from submarine eruptions, at the foot of the Acicastello castle about 600,000 years ago where the Plain of Catania would later be formed.
After the pick-up at your accommodation, you will move by car to reach the Sapienza Refuge (1920 s.l.m.) making, during the journey, stops at certain observation points. A few steps from the square of the Sapienza Refuge are the Silvestri Craters, one of the main attractions of Etna.
The lava soil is very fertile, rich in numerous nutrients and mineral salts; the vegetation is quite dense, frequently changing the landscape according to the altitude. On the north-east side at the foot of the volcano we can admire, in addition to the olive trees, several vineyards where an excellent wine is produced, now famous all over the world.
Finally, we will stop in a typical wine cellar to taste five different types of wines including white, rosé and red as well as enjoy an extraordinary landscape and a delicious local lunch with meats, cheeses, olives and much more.
