Visit to the Valley of the Temples and the Hellenistic-Roman Quarter. Continue by car to the Villa Romana del Casale, known for its precious Roman mosaics
Agrigento is par excellence the land symbol of Greek colonization in Italy. It houses the largest Archaeological Park in the world (about 1300 hectares) and has been included since 1997 in the UNESCO list of Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the Valley of the Temples. It constitutes a series of important Doric temples of the Hellenic period, dating back to the period of Magna Graecia between the fourth and fifth centuries A.C. We will then visit the Valley of the Temples with ten well-preserved Doric Temples including the Temple of Juno, the Temple of Concordia, the Temple of Hercules, Olympia, Castor and Pollux. On request it is possible to visit the Scala dei Turchi, where it is less than 20 km from the Valley of the Temples. Afterwards, visit of the Villa Romana del Casale located about 4 km from the historic center of Piazza Armerina which, thanks to its 3500 square meters of Roman mosaics, depicting scenes inspired by mythology and the daily life of the Roman aristocracy, has recently been declared a World Heritage Site. The Villa, is an archaeological site of considerable importance that contains inside a Roman imperial palace built between the third and fourth centuries of the Emperor Maximian when it was destroyed by Guglielmo il Malo and later covered by the rubble of Monte Mangone. At the end of 1800 it was partially rediscovered and in 1950 the archaeologist Gino Vinicio Gentili carried out archaeological excavations.
