The seafront promenade with Montalbano's fictional house
Punta Secca and Montalbano's house
Il Commissario Montalbano is an Italian television series, produced since 1999. The series, based on the novels of Andrea Camilleri, tells the story of Salvo Montalbano, police commissioner in the imaginary Sicilian town of Vigata.
Almost all the episodes were shot in the so-called Baroque Sicily (Ragusa Ibla, Scicli and Modica). We will visit the Vigata Commissariat which is nothing less than the Town Hall of the baroque town of Scicli, where the commissioner's office is actually that of the mayor. We will visit one of the most used areas in the filming of the TV transposition of Commissioner Montalbano, Ragusa and in particular Ibla, which is its oldest area, with a splendid Piazza del Duomo that can be seen in several scenes, as well as the Church of San Giorgio , the Church of Santa Maria delle Scale and glimpses of the Ibleo Garden. We will also be at the Donnafugata Castle, a sumptuous noble residence from the late 1800s, often used as a set for the TV series. And on the same day we will be in Punta Secca, a seaside village in the province of Ragusa where the house used as the Inspector's residence is located, with the famous terrace. And then the streets of Modica, a jewel of Baroque art, where it will be possible to learn about the production methods of real Modica chocolate still made according to the ancient tradition.
In short, following in the footsteps of Montalbano will allow you to immerse yourself in the most authentic Sicily, get to know its towns and the sea but also the smells and flavors that characterize it.Photo by jean-michel gobet, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons
